Mail and Wire Offenses
It is against the law to use the mail, wire, radio, or television
communication to carry out a scheme to defraud, or to obtain money
or property by fraudulent means. Under federal law, mail and
wire fraud carry statutory maximums of 20 years imprisonment, unless
the violations affect a financial institution, which then increases
the penalty to $1,000,000 in fines or up to 30 years imprisonment,
or both.
